Dance therapy

Dance Therapy - Six Emotional Method

The Dance Therapy – Six Emotional Method is a combination of exercises (strengthening and stretching), dance movements and free dance improvisation to support the mental, emotional and motor functions of the body. This model looks at the connection between movement and emotion for prevention and rehabilitation. The emphasis in Dance Therapy is an approach closely related to the expression and transformation of emotions.

The general goals of this therapy are:
– Improvement of physical fitness (as well as return of muscle strength and treatment of muscle atrophy)
– increase in functionality
-organic expression of the self

It is expected that upon completion of the process of the Dance Therapy program the goals will be achieved due to:
– the production of many hormones, such as endorphins, which affect the brain chemistry of the treated person, as well as his or her mood
– the strengthening of the body through successive exercises,
– improving concentration,
– freedom of expression through improvisation,
– better energy distribution, relieving inner tension, physical and mental stress through breathing exercises,
– reduction of stress and anxiety, due to the free expression of emotions.

The Dance Therapy Program incorporates muscle exercises, stretches, dance movements in different dance styles, breathing exercises and improvisation in relation to emotions. An important time for therapy is to analyse the music used during sessions, which can help relaxation and reduce pain or anxiety.
The innovative model was created as a result of Dr. Galena Velikova’s long research and study of Dance Therapy against Depression and Parkinson’s disease. The remarkable results have been presented at several international conferences of Unesco (IDC), as well as at the conference of Gen. In addition, the conference was held at the General Hospital of Athens “G. Gennimatas”, under the auspices of the Academy of Neurosciences at the Athens Concert Hall.

Curriculum

In the Dance Therapy program, students are taught in-depth experiential kinesiology, movement improvisation, physical intelligence, authentic movement and the skills, methods and applications of Dance Therapy (Six Emotional Method).

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to perceive, observe and interpret movement using new skills in Dance Therapy such as movement analysis. Tap into the perception and experience of their own body and increase their kinesthetic awareness.
